Angika – Satvika: Function-Expression

With Rajyashree Ramesh, Erika Eller and Eva Balzer

Movements of the body are in their functionality based on expression. This is a developmental characteristic. In the classical repertoire of Bharatanatyam, this characteristic is exemplified through the practise of precise crystalline movements and the expression of specific contents and emotions. Mundane narratives and everyday movements, stylised contextual elements and - last but not the least – a ‘communication’ with gods are transformed into performative practice. In the Indian dance theatre, physiological processes are combined with feelings, taking us to inner subtle and subjective realms, which in turn take the shape of outer expression, dynamic, graceful, strongly expressive and radiant. The performance will lead performers and audience through the relationship between Bhava (feelings) and Rasa (experience) with the help of various contexts and character representations.
