Indian Cinema KAIYOPPU at Indian embassy

India 2007, Malayalam + engl. ST, 86 min

The film's story described in one line is simply that of a talented writer fighting writer's block. It tells the story of Balachandran, who works as an accountant in a fertilizer company in Kochi and lives immersed in the world of books. He attracts everyone with his pleasant manners and sincere talkativeness. His room in the lodge is a treasure of world literature, where you could find even the rare copies of out of print books. As far as literature is concerned, he is an encyclopedia and the passion that he has for books and reading amazes almost everyone. Books which are his only friends have a great influence on him which forces him to scribble something occasionally. Still unmarried, he has been living alone for years in this run-down lodge.

Angika – Satvika: Function-Expression at Indian embassy

Angika – Satvika: Function-Expression

With Rajyashree Ramesh, Erika Eller and Eva Balzer

Movements of the body are in their functionality based on expression. This is a developmental characteristic. In the classical repertoire of Bharatanatyam, this characteristic is exemplified through the practise of precise crystalline movements and the expression of specific contents and emotions. Mundane narratives and everyday movements, stylised contextual elements and - last but not the least – a ‘communication’ with gods are transformed into performative practice. In the Indian dance theatre, physiological processes are combined with feelings, taking us to inner subtle and subjective realms, which in turn take the shape of outer expression, dynamic, graceful, strongly expressive and radiant. The performance will lead performers and audience through the relationship between Bhava (feelings) and Rasa (experience) with the help of various contexts and character representations.

25.11.2008 Dance Theatre Kathakali at Indian embassy ► Berlin ◄

Dance Theatre Kathakali at Indian embassy

Kathakali is a famous traditional dance of Kerala, It is performed by selecting themes form Ramayana, Mahabharatha and Bhagavatha. One of the most interesting aspects of Kathakali is its elaborate make-up code. Characters are categorized according to their nature. This determines the colours used in the make-up. The faces of noble male characters, such as virtuous kings, the divine hero Rama, etc., are predominantly green. Characters of high birth who have an evil streak, such as the demon king Ravana, are allotted a similar green make-up, slashed with red marks on the cheeks. Extremely angry or excessively evil characters wear predominantly red make-up and a flowing red beard. Forest dwellers such as hunters are represented with a predominantly black make-up base. Women and ascetics have lustrous, yellowish faces. The technique of Kathakali includes a highly developed language of gesture, through which the artist can convey whole sentences and stories. The body movements and footwork are very rigourous. To attain the high degree of flexibility and muscle control required for this art, a Kathakali dancer undergoes a strenuous course of training, and special periods of body massage. The dancers wear large head dresses, and the contours of the face are extended with moulded lime. The extraordinary costumes and make-up serve to raise the participants above the level of mere mortals, so that they may transport the audience to a world of wonders. >>> read more ...
