Ustad Bismillah Khan was born in 1916 in Bihar. As a child, he came to Benares, where he began to learn music from his maternal uncle, Ali Bux, who played Shehnai at the KAshi Vishwanath temple every morning. It was a tradition, that Bismillah continued over the years. Ustad Bismillah Khan raised the Shehnai from its humble origins to the level of a concert instrument.
